This project is easy to listen to from front to back—and it’s meant to be. The songs are complete, and the records feels intentional the whole way through. You can tell this wasn’t rushed. Coach Tev really locked in on making songs, not just throwing verses on beats. That kind of attention to actual song creation is hard to find on the independent scene, so hearing that here was refreshing. It’s become something we’ve come to expect from Tev at this point.

One of Our Favorites

This is easily one of our favorite Coach Tev projects, right there with Talk to Him Nicely. After sitting with the full album, we’re standing on what we said before: he’s the smoothest artist in Texas. It’s a consistent feel all the way through, but with enough variety to keep things moving.

Track Breakdown

He kicked things off with a jazzy intro—piano keys, a nice sample, smooth all around. Our favorite bar in that opener was:

“I’m at that age where n****s known to quit, I can’t even blame 'em, can you see the price on rent?”

That’s real.

“Local Politics” is a fire, smooth record. His “Nicely Done” tag being woven into it was a nice touch. Then there’s “Smoke & Mirrors” featuring Blake Cris and Chloe Jobin. Tev and Blake always go off when they see-saw verses—it’s dope every time. Our favorite Tev bar on that record:

“She came to me as a sinner and I’ll turn her into a winner.”

Then the track fades out, and honestly, we wanted more. That moment was perfect.

“Cosplaying Rappers” was the one joint that really leaned into that true hip-hop space—something that felt reminiscent of a Tribe Called Quest beat. Then “Talk Heavy” gave us another rap-rap moment. Our favorite bar on there?

“Boy I’m so about my bidness you gotta message me on Slack.”

That’s a bar for the business owners and the corporate world. Subtle flex.

Versatility & Flow

One thing that stood out across the whole project: the different flows. This wasn’t one of those one-flow, one-sound albums that’s been running the game the past few years. Tev switched it up throughout, which made it more fun to listen to. The whole project is extremely cohesive, and it plays all the way through without breaking the vibe.

Cover Art of the Year?

The cover is a staff favorite. Honestly, it made us want a vinyl copy just so we could have a bigger version of the artwork. That’s how hard it hit. The visuals really helped set the tone for the whole project before the music even starts.

The Fans Feel It Too

Tev had fans hit him with their thoughts on IG, and here are a few that stood out:

“You get 100k plays, it’s me bro. I got this hoe on back to back with no skips.”“That’s the wave I be searchin’ for honestly, and you be on point no doubt. I’m motivated and inspired off the album and learning from listening.”“Dude it should be a crime to be this nonchalant.”

Those reactions say it all.

Catch Coach Tev Live

If you’re trying to hear this project live, you’ll have your shot. Coach Tev is performing on 4/20 at Three Links in Deep Ellum. If this tape is anything to go by, that show’s about to be special.
