Live instrument lovers filled the cozy, candle-lit Monks Jazz on Jan. 9, 2025, drawn by the promise of live jazz with the Eli Menezes Quartet. The nostalgic venue, with its layered brick walls and intimate loft-like feel, served as the perfect backdrop for a night of music that was as soulful as it was eclectic. It was a packed house—a diverse crowd of jazz enthusiasts, couples on date nights, and solo attendees all eager to experience the magic.

Led by Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Eli Menezes, the quartet delivered a performance that delivered an exciting fusion of jazz with diverse stylistic elements, including what sounded like possible Spanish and hip-hop undertones. Menezes, whose impressive career has spanned over 60 countries and collaborations with icons like Lauryn Hill, Faith Evans, and Common, took center stage on guitar, captivating the audience with his melodic precision and charismatic presence.

Alongside Menezes was saxophonist Matt Chiasson, whose rich, soaring notes were a highlight for many, including this writer, a self-proclaimed sucker for a good saxophone. Bassist Ryan Hagler anchored the group with warm, resonant tones, while drummer Daniel Watson infused the evening with an unexpected but delightful subtle hip-hop energy—effortlessly sliding it into the rhythm without overpowering the classic jazz vibe.

The audience’s energy matched the band’s dynamic performance. Cheers erupted often, sometimes prematurely before a song had fully concluded, a testament to how enthralling the music was. While the venue enforced a whisper policy to maintain the integrity of the live taping, it was clear the crowd’s excitement bubbled just beneath the surface. The respect for the musicians remained unwavering, and the whisper policy only added to the intimate, focused atmosphere.

A standout moment came when a guest pianist joined the band for a brief but unforgettable set.

Though their time on stage was short, their performance left an indelible impression, leaving the crowd yearning for more. Between songs, Menezes engaged the audience with lighthearted banter, even joking about the availability of some of the band members for prospective suitors. The humor and ease with which the band interacted with the crowd made the evening feel more like a gathering among friends than a formal concert.

After the show, the band lingered to mingle with attendees, further solidifying the warm and inviting vibe that defined the night. As the audience trickled out, the collective mood was one of upliftment and joy—a perfect blend of good vibes and great music.

For anyone seeking an inspiring live music experience, Monks Jazz provides an ideal setting. Whether you’re on a date, catching up with friends, or exploring solo, the venue’s intimate charm and the Eli Menezes Quartet’s incredible talent make for an unforgettable evening.
