Jahn Dough's latest project, A Sip of Tea, is a nine-track journey that showcases his signature sound—a natural, slightly sped-up bounce that defines his unique style. The cohesion of this project is evident as he seamlessly navigates through themes of introspection, family, and faith. Here's a closer look at some of our favorite moments from the project.

Highlights

The album kicks off with "Opening Sermon," an introduction that does exactly what it should—pull you in. It's not a traditional rap intro; instead, it's more of a poetic message layered over a heavily textured beat. Now that i think about it, the record is exactly as titled. it's an opening sermon. The depth in the instrumental and vocal layers set the tone for something introspective and sincere. One line that stands out is, "Don't be scared of the truth because that means freedom is coming next." This bar hits hard, setting a thoughtful and authentic vibe that carries throughout the project.

"Trouble$" is the second track and the guitar is fire. Jahn Dough often reminds me of Freddie Gibbs, but without the excessive content about crack cocaine and violent crime—so if you like Gangsta Gibbs, you'll appreciate "Trouble$" as well. The lead single from the project, "I Ain't Got It," features Honey Daii, a talented singer-songwriter making waves in Texas' R&B scene—and who also happens to be Jahn Dough's wife. Let's just take a moment to appreciate how special this is for hip hop and R&B: a couple collaborating on such a dope crossover track. The record gives listeners an authentic glimpse into their connection, and the chemistry between them is palpable.

"Winter's Angel" is a direct chapter from Jahn Dough's life where he tells a relatable story of the challenges and emotions of manhood, family, and becoming a father. It’s a buildup record that will keep you engaged, offering an intimate glimpse into his journey.

With "Mind Right," Jahn Dough delivers an instructional rap that encourages listeners to refocus and get on track. "Get your mind right" is something we all need to tell ourselves sometimes, and Jahn Dough approaches this record with a smooth delivery. It’s a great track to relax to, wake up to and smoke to. It carries a laid-back but motivating energy that resonates.

"Still Here" is another standout, reminiscent of a Schoolboy Q record with the way it’s textured. It’s a gritty, confident track that serves as a reminder of resilience and perseverance, and Jahn Dough’s vocal presence really shines here.

The project closes with "Phases," an outro that carries significant weight—it’s far from a throwaway track. Jahn Dough treats this closer with the respect it deserves, delivering a vibe that is both relatable and introspective. He talks about not wanting to be in environments that threaten his peace, touching on the idea of choosing safer spaces over the unpredictable dangers of certain parties. It’s an honest moment that resonates with anyone who prioritizes their safety and well-being.

I second that. If the security guard doesn't have that little metal detector thing I don't even play around. Can't let somebody who can't handle their alcohol ruin my night. I can play music and drink with friends at the crib.

Conclusion

Overall, A Sip of Tea is a cohesive and thoughtfully constructed project that highlights Jahn Dough’s ability to blend introspection with bounce, creating an experience that feels both natural and fresh. Whether you’re a fan of classic boom bap or just looking for something that balances depth with groove, A Sip of Tea is worth a listen.
