The Full-Band R&B Sets That Stole the Show at SXSW

SXSW is known for showcasing the unexpected. Between the pop-ups, street cyphers, and late-night discoveries, some of the most unforgettable performances come from artists who bring not just a mic, but a full band to the stage. This year, two standout acts reminded us of the energy, soul, and intention that a live R&B set can deliver when every note and nuance is performed in real time.

Here are the two artists whose full-band performances at SXSW didn’t just impress us — they made us instant fans.

Xavier Omär

San Antonio native Xavier Omär has long been known for tugging at the heart with his raw, love-soaked lyrics. From his early collaborations with Sango to breakout tracks like “Blind Man” and the Obama-approved “Feelings 4 You,” Xavier has built a catalog that centers vulnerability, faith, and emotional clarity. His sonic palette pulls influence from James Blake, Pharrell, and The 1975, giving his version of R&B a distinct edge.

At SXSW, he hit the stage backed by a tight four-piece band: drums, piano, guitar, and a beatmaker working the pad controller. Together, they delivered one of the most electrifying R&B sets we’ve seen in a while. The musical chemistry was undeniable — the players were synced up, but never mechanical. Each band member brought small creative touches that elevated the live versions of the songs beyond their recorded counterparts. It felt like a conversation between vocals and instrumentation, and every freestyle element landed perfectly.

And yes, he delivered that iconic line live: “Girl, you’re so beautiful that a blind man can love you.” Goosebumps.

Alesia Lani

Alesia Lani may be a rising name in R&B, but her presence on stage is already superstar-level. Midwest-born and Texas-raised, the singer-songwriter has been building a name for herself through a blend of pop, soul, and indie textures — with a sharp eye for style to match. Her self-titled debut EP dropped in 2023, showcasing a voice that cuts deep and themes that center self-discovery, love, and empowerment.

At SXSW, she gave us the performance of the week. Performing outdoors on the Rivian Stage, Alesia stepped into the sun rocking dark shades, short wavy hair, tattoos, and baggy pants — a whole vibe. From the jump, she came out jammin’.

Her band was a full house: five members, including a violinist and a DJ who scratched live throughout the set, adding a subtle hip-hop edge to her commanding R&B sound. There was no backing track on her vocals — just raw, intentional delivery that hit hard every time. Each song felt personal, heavy with meaning, and performed with a sense of purpose that held the crowd in place.

Alesia is the kind of artist you see once and immediately start planning to see again. And after this set, we’ll be first in line next time she hits the stage.
